Why Your New Year's Weight Loss Resolutions Keep Failing: Breaking the Cycle

Traditionally the start of the year is a time for setting new year resolutions and goals for the year ahead. But why do we need the new year to do this? The gym will be busier in January than any other month of the year, but 80% of those new members will drop off by the 2nd week of February. We set out at the start of the year with all the best of intentions but by less than 6 weeks into the new year and we've given up and reverted back to our bad habits. How many times have we started a new year with the same goals as the previous year? Why is it we repeat this cycle year after year?!

I have repeated this cycle myself year after year until I realised that I was making no progress and the constant yo-yo dieting was actually detrimental to my health. Restricting myself from all the foods I enjoyed for a limited amount of time, resulted in bingeing and subsequent weight gain. I exercised for weight loss alone, not appreciating the other physical benefits of working out let alone the mental benefits.

This led me to develop my sustainable approach to healthy living based on balance. No food or drink is off limits, exercise is included to make me feel great, to boost serotonin, manage dopamine and keep my heart healthy. Having ADHD means I can't retain dopamine for as long as most people so exercise helps me boost and regulate dopamine production, helping me manage my mental health and be happier as well as healthier.

So yes, the new year is a great time to start as we mean to go on, our focus and determination is stronger but we are still likely to lapse back into old habits once our focus shifts back to regular everyday bullshit as we move through the year. Our health and goals become secondary to work, family & social commitments. But without our health, none of the other things matter. We should be focusing on our own health for the benefit of our family, making sure we're there to see our children grow up and to draw our pensions that we've worked so hard towards.
